Race 2 was all about the story of Mark Paget...or rather the crash between Team Excalibur and the defending champions Team RGM. After the start in the first corner, the two rigs crashed together. Depending on whose version it was, Team Excalibur was left running at eighth, while Team RGM was in the gravel trying to get back into the race. Team RGM's passenger Mark Paget saw the crash coming, still decided to move to his right position, and ended up separating his shoulders and tore his ligaments as a result of the crash. He popped back his shoulder by leaning against a pit wall, hopped back onto his rig and kept going without ever telling his driver Murray that he was actually hurt and in pain. Somehow both rigs managed to finish second and third at the end. Meanwhile Steve Stull's old rig acted up again, and despite his overnite effort to repair the chain, it broke again at the start and he had to pull off at the first corner. Both Riolo and the Beckers ran over the chain and the former sustained minor damage to the rig. It was a scare for both teams. As for the race itself, Kelly Bell-Eric Rude ran basically unopposed due to the mayham at the back, and Team Dawg Pound also finished fifth, just like the first race. Gary Woolf managed to get veteren Mike Schmidt as his passenger and they came in sixth, a big improvement. Mike flew in the previous day, only to find out that his driver did not show up because the rig was not ready. The Pucketts, VanOrsdale-Thomas, Quinn-Bowden, Janes-Ho finished up the order. The latter, with Team Subculture's F2 rig not showing up, effectively "won" the unofficial junior rig class by a walk over. Team Subculture, the 2002 champions (and 2001 passenger champion), in fact, did not show up at all because their truck broke down. After the race there were heated exchanges between Riolo and Murray, but it was all part of racing. Both drivers shook hands at the end and all was well.
